Introduction

BT MODULE (v.3.0 and v.4.x)

BT MODULE (v.3.0)

ST’s latest micro-sized Blue Module series offers a fast, flexible and affordable Bluetooth solution on a highly reliable platform based on the most advanced Bluetooth technology.
Modules, optimized in terms of performances and costs, support the latest Bluetooth Classic Bluetooth 3.0 and are compatible with previous Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

The Bluetooth stack is embedded in ST’s Blue Modules with the profiles and a user-friendly application that ensures a simple and effective way to use the modules via AT commands.
The AT command set is a powerful application embedded in the Blue Modules and implements a user-friendly interface.

The AT2 firmware version enables communication with Android, smartphones and most Bluetooth enabled devices that support the serial port profile, including the Apple iOS Bluetooth enabled devices.
The external Apple authentication coprocessor and MFI certification are required.

The modules are fully RF and BQE qualified and RoHs compliant.

MODBT
BT Module (v4.x)

The SPBTLE-RF is an easy to use Bluetooth® Smart master/slave network processor module, compliant with Bluetooth®v4.1.
The SPBTLE-RF B-SmarT module supports multiple roles simultaneously, and can act at the same time as Bluetooth Smart sensor and hub device.

The entire Bluetooth Smart stack and protocols are embedded into SPBTLE-RF B-SmarT module. The external host application processor, where the application resides, is connected to the SPBTLE-RF B-SmarT module through a standard SPI interface

The SPBTLE-RF B-SmarT module provides a complete RF platform in a tiny form factor.
Radio, antenna, high frequency and LPO oscillators are integrated to offer a certified solution to optimize the time to market of the final applications.

The SPBTLE-RF can be powered directly with a standard 3 V coin cell battery, a pair of AAA batteries or any power source from 1.7 to 3.6 V.

Bluetooth Low Energy ICs (v.4.x)

BlueNRG
Bluetooth® low energy wireless network processor supporting Bluetooth 4.0 core specification

The BlueNRG is a very low power Bluetooth low energy (BLE) single-mode network processor, compliant with Bluetooth specification v4.0. The BlueNRG can act as master or slave. The entire Bluetooth low energy stack runs on the embedded Cortex M0 core. The non-volatile Flash memory allows on-field stack upgrading. The BlueNRG allows applications to meet the tight advisable peak current requirements imposed by the use of standard coin cell batteries. The maximum peak current is only 10 mA at 1 dBm of output power. Ultra low-power sleep modes and very short transition times between operating modes allow very low average current consumption, resulting in longer battery life. The BlueNRG offers the option of interfacing with external microcontrollers using SPI transport layer.

BlueNRG-MS
Bluetooth Low Energy Network Processor supporting Bluetooth 4.1 core specification

The BlueNRG-MS is a very low power Bluetooth low energy (BLE) single-mode network processor, compliant with Bluetooth specification v4.1. The BlueNRG-MS supports multiple roles simultaneously, and can act at the same time as Bluetooth Smart sensor and hub device.
The entire Bluetooth low energy stack runs on the embedded Cortex M0 core. The non-volatile Flash memory allows on-field stack upgrading. The BlueNRG-MS allows applications to meet of the tight advisable peak current requirements imposed with the use of standard coin cell batteries. The maximum peak current is only 10 mA at 1 dBm of output power. Ultra low-power sleep modes and very short transition times between operating modes allow very low average current consumption, resulting in longer battery life. The BlueNRG-MS offers the option of interfacing with external microcontrollers using SPI transport layer.

BT technology

Up to now there are different release of BT, for example there is v2.1, v3.0, BTLE that are v.4.x
For see the differences from the different release of BT see here and here.
Here I want to highlight the differences inside the BT 4.x
The latest Bluetooth version 4.x boasts two additional certifications: Smart Ready
and Smart .
  • BT 4.x Smart Ready identifies the dual-mode support or compatibility with older standards and more advanced features.
  • BT 4.x Smart is for simple devices that aim to reduce consumption, this version is NOT copatible with the older BT standards.
