November 2014 - Power Management news from STMicroelectronics
  • High performance rectification without the expense and complexity of going synchronous
The new generation of diodes, Field-Effect Rectifier Diode series (FERD), is an innovative power conversion rectification solution for applications where the efficiency of Schottky diodes is limited and synchronous rectification with MOSFETs and dedicated controllers is too complex and expensive.
The FERD series provides a rectification performance in the application close to that of synchronous solutions yet with the lower complexity of traditional rectification techniques. Rated from 45 V to 100 V, these new diodes are particularly efficient in adapters, DC/DC converters, telecom power, lighting, as well as in bypass functions for photovoltaic applications.
  • DC-DC converter with synchronous rectification delivers high efficiency in the widest output range
The L6986 step-down monolithic switching regulator with synchronous rectification helps achieve the highest efficiency with a very low quiescent and a low consumption mode specific for light load conditions. The use of a P-channel MOSFET high-side power element pushes the duty cycle virtually to 100% so output voltages can span from 0.85 V to 38 V (VIN) and, with a switching frequency that can go as high as 2 MHz, dramatically reduces power passive cost and size. The L6986 is ideal in a range of Industrial applications like factory automation, security or smart grid and comes in a space-saving 16-pin HTSSOP package.
  • Evaluate ST’s digital LED lighting solution with high current accuracy and optional DALI interface
The STEVAL-ILL057V1 evaluation board is a configurable lighting solution for managing four independent high-brightness LED channels using ST’s STLUX385A digital power controller.
Each LED channel takes full advantage of the inverse-buck topology configuration for a very precise current control from 250 mA to 1 A to guarantee the right level of brightness and avoid flickering. The number of LEDs, the current and the PWM dimming point can be easily set through the command interpreter, accessible via the serial interface.
The DALI interface is supported by the STEVAL-ILM001V1 connection board.
  • Small-size power MOSFET drivers optimized for digital power conversion applications
The PM8841 and PM8851 are high-frequency, single-channel, low-side MOSFET drivers specifically optimized to work in digital power conversion designs such as
    STLUX385A-based LED lighting solutions.
Their 1 A sink and 0.8 A source capability is ideal for 100 W off-line applications with optimized EMI performances. Charge (source) and discharge (sink) pins are separated on the PM8851 thus enabling an optimized design of the turn-on/turn-off switching behavior while eliminating the need for an external diode. The PM8841 and PM8851 come in extremely compact SOT23-5 packages.
  • SiC diodes go insulated
ST’s 650 V silicon-carbide (SiC) portfolio is now extended with seven new single and dual diodes housed in insulated 2- or 3-lead TO-220 packages. From 4 A to 10 A, four single diodes are now housed in an insulated TO-220AC package, and three new dual in-series diodes from 6 A to 10 A in an insulated TO-220AB package. With this new insulated package, the external insulating foil between the heatsink and the diodes is no longer required, reducing manufacturing costs while actually improving the thermal performance.

September 2014 - Aerospace news from STMicroelectronics
  • Aerospace and Defense Products
    • Electronics in aerospace applications such as satellites and aircraft are subjected to high levels of radiation from high-energy particles (heavy ions). ST proposes a large portfolio of products specifically designed, packaged, tested and qualified so they comply with the standards for aerospace defined by the qualifying agencies.
    • ST has supported European aerospace applications since 1977, being qualified by the ESA (European Space Agency) since the agency's inception. Today, ST has broadened its efforts by qualifying products according to the American QML-V standard (of the US DLA - Defense Logistics Agency), and in accordance with RHA certification (Radiation Hardness Assurance).
    • ST offers a wide aerospace product range, from diodes and transistors to A/D converters and voltage regulators, through its traditional logic circuits range. It is actively working on further expanding this offer.
  • New JANSR+ 100 krad low-dose-rate transistors offer superior performance
ST's bipolar transistors provide best-in-class radiation hardness. The JANSR+ devices complement the ESCC qualified parts and offer not only 100-krad high-dose-rate tolerance but are also guaranteed at low-dose rates thanks to testing of every wafer with an additional 100-krad test performed at 100 mrad/s. The range includes both NPN and PNP devices in LCC-3, UB and TO-18 packages.
  • Superior radiation hardness and electrical characteristics with ST's LVDS ICs
The new series comprises the RHFLVDS31A and RHFLVDS32A driver/receiver ICs as well as the RHFLVDSR2D2 dual transceiver. All devices exceed the application robustness requirements for heavy ions and high total ionizing dose, operating up to 135 MeV.cm²/mg SEL-free (Single-Event Latch-up) in the case of the LVDS31A/32A and achieving best-in-class SET-withstand (Single-Event Transient) capability. The devices display no significant deviation of static or dynamic features up to a total ionizing dose of 300 krad (MIL-STD-883 TM1019) making them a perfect choice for satellite applications.
  • New Rad-hard precision shunt voltage references
The new RHF100 1.2 V fixed and RHF1009A 2.5 V to 5.5 V adjustable precision shunt voltage references are guaranteed at 300-krad high- and low-dose rates. They are ELDRS-free up to 100 krad and SEL-free up to 120 MeV.cm2/mg. Boasting a stability as low as 15 ppm/°C over the full -55 °C to +125 °C temperature range and a wide operating current range of from only 40 µA up to 12 mA, both devices are supplied in Flat-10 ceramic packages. QML-V qualification of both RHF100 and RHF1009A is expected before the end of October.
  • Rad-hard, very high-speed comparator
The RHR801 is a very high-speed single comparator with rise and fall times of only 8 ns on 10 pF yet with a supply noise rejection ratio up to 70 dB. It uses a high-speed BiCMOS process to achieve its very good speed/power ratio, is guaranteed to 100-krad high-dose-rate radiation and is QML-V qualified. The RHR801 is mounted in a hermetic Flat-8 package.
  • ST Aerospace and Hi-rel product reference guide
The new 32-page document includes selection tables and details of all of ST's ESCC, JANS and QML products for space and high radiation environments. It can be downloaded here.
